Philip has a background of architecture, interior and furniture design. However, as a self-taught sculptor one can see how his history has influenced the elegant, architectural, sensual bronze sculptures he has been producing for many years now. He specialises in the sandcasting process to create pieces engaging with that “noble material” of bronze, the metal he adores and has such a feel for.
Philip lives and works in the beautiful, wild and remote Welsh Borders of Herefordshire. This land-locked landscape is geographically-opposed to the changeable coastline of the South West where Philip draws much of his inspiration.
Philip cuts, carves, grinds or welds the cast bronze to design unique forms before exposing the natural bronze or oxidising the piece to create a unique surface. The patination has become Philip’s trademark speciality and adds the most wonderful dimension to his work, the colour giving character and depth to these beautiful sculptures. For instance; the turquoise, multi-dappled, hues give the illusion of sun-infused sea or the verdigris quality of ancient artefacts discovered in the ocean. Coupling this with a dramatic swirl of solid bronze gives a sense of the sea, the wind; nature in the raw.
The shape and form of Philip’s unusual sculptures are organic and naturalistic, this juxtaposes with the shining glimpses of polished bronze slithers or facets giving the pieces another-worldly feel. Their sensual look naturally begs to be touched, the viewer can sense the love that has gone into creating these desirable artworks. Philip’s sculptures are exhibited at Art galleries throughout the UK and grace the homes of art lovers with a taste for impeccable design.
